Kinja'd!!!

So I was driving to another middle of nowhere town (Atlanta Il) via some not so major roads with a friend to pick up a set of his wheels. The weather turned from good to I can't see 5 ft off my hood and insane wind speeds as we were between fields with nothing insight. As I'm driving sudenely my friend notices two people on the side of the road so I slow down and ask them if they need help. It's a mother and her about 3ish y.o. child. While telling them to hop in she mentions that she needs a phone and was looking for a house to get some help. There was no houses near by and it's below 0 with I'm guessing about 60 mph winds (I couldn't put on my coat without wind cover). That's extrememly dangerous for those of you that haven't been in this weather. She mentions her truck is in a ditch up the road (max 100ft with its hazards on and I couldn't see it) and luckily I'm in my forester which has a tow strap and I pull her Chevy s10 out. Point being is there are plenty of government assistance programs and we're in the 21st century, not having a cell phone for emergencies is an unnecessary risk. Also if you are in the middle of nowhere in insane weather on a less then traveled road, stay in your vehicle. I know most of you guys know how to stay safe in this weather but share this information with others. (Add keep half a tank of gas at the least). Stay safe Oppo.

Chances are it's some brick phone and they usually keep a charge forever. I forgot to mention any cellphone (even ones not activated) can call 911. Most elderly I know are good at keeping the electronics they have in working order, so chances are she'll be fine. Just try making sure she brings it with her.

My dad refuses to get a cell phone. Nothing I say will persuade him, pure stubbornness. Will probably only get worse.

Give him one of your old ones (preferably with the longest battery) and a car charger. Teach him how to dial 911 and throw it all in the glovebox. All phones including inactivated ones can dial 911. He probably doesn't want to waste the money, but you can probably convince him to do that at no cost.

It is not a smart phone, it is not even a flip phone. It's similar to the phone I had in 2000, before I went to a flip phone.

Aka the brick, they're hardy phones and their battery's never die as they didn't have competitions to who could be the slimmest. It's the perfect phone for elderly people (that and the jitterbug).

People are just ignorant to the dangers of cold whether, I've already recovered a lady this year who slid off the road because her car had Summer tires. "But it has quattro drive!" SMH.

Has the cell service gotten any better in the area? I lived among the corn, 7 miles west of Atlanta for 2-1/2 months back in 2006. I always had to drive to town and park next to the interstate to make a cell phone call. Although that could be because I had stupid Nextel at the time.

But yeah, get a phone people, or at LEAST buy a CB radio, and stay in your freaking car. They're damn lucky you found them, because weather like that will get you killed REAL quick.

As long as the service is provided by AT&T or Verizon your usually fine (I have no experience with the others). Data is useless but I usually don't lose service as most places have lte/4g and I believe that helped extend the range of the towers. Service used to be terrible though. That weather was beyond crazy and you wouldn't even have noticed more then a light snow storm if you were in town. Once you were in between the large fields, the wind went crazy.

Yeah, it's crazy how nasty it can get in those wide open spaces!
